How to tell hatchery salmon from wild? ›

On a hatchery fish, the adipose fin is removed, while a wild fish has an intact adipose fin. Since the 1970s, federal agencies have worked closely with states and treaty tribes in the Pacific Northwest to reverse the decline of native salmon populations.

All you need to do is check the adipose fin, located along the fish's back between its dorsal fin and tail (see photos above). Stocked fish have their adipose fins removed before they are released into our waters–and they never grow back–so if this fin is missing, you are guaranteed to be holding a stocked fish.

No fish are spawned at this hatchery. Instead, eggs are received from other Montana state and federal hatcheries and from some wild sources. The upper unit has egg incubation and indoor raceways where eggs are hatched.

Look for the gravid spot on the fish's abdomen near the rear tail. The spot should appear large and dark when her eggs are fertilized. You will know your fish is close to giving birth when the spot becomes nearly black. Some fish may show white spots instead of black.
